A Neighborhood problem concerning the paving of Cottom Road will be
discussed at the County Commission meeting on Tuesday, October 16th at
9:00 in the Commission Chambers in the Administration building on
Albright street. The neighbors can use the support of those interested
in this issue as well as its ramifications for everyone.
The majority of the residents on Cottam Road are opposed to the paving
of Cottam due to the safety concerns for the people who travel on this
road. Steep grade, black ice conditions in the winter months and poor
drainage in summer storms producing flooding at the Bottom of Cottam and
on the Ranchitos/SR240.
Basically the residents feel that there is a complete LACK OF PLANNING
as well as an UNWILLINGNESS TO TELL THE COMMUNITY THE PLAN OR ASK FOR
COMMUNITY INPUT. The result is that the neighborhood is left with
UNSAFE ROAD CONDITIONS.
Residents report that despite numerous attempts for information, the
County Road Department will not demonstrate how paving this road will
reduce safety hazards that currently exist. No reports from engineers
have been presented or EIS reports.
Residents feel that emergency vehicles will have less accessibility in
winter months due to black ice conditions. Currently if Cottam were
improved and
maintained as gravel the black ice conditions would be more quickly
mitigated than with pavement.
Paving of Cottam with the steepness of the grade as well a blind curves
on Ranchitos/SR240 will potentially create the same dangerous and
hazardous conditions that currently exist on Lower Las Colonias Road and
Blueberry Hill Road.
Attend the meeting to join in their concerns.
