Hello Everyone:
Here is a quick update of what TRTR is currently involved in. First of all
we had a very productive meeting on May 8th and it was good to have more
folks on board to work on the transportation/road issues. We continue to
want to develop road committees to go into the community and seek the input
necessary to repair, maintain and/or improve the lateral roads in and around
Taos. Thanks to those who came to the meeting and those who have been
emailing me expressing interest in our work.
Secondly, we have recently learned there will be another joint powers
meeting with the Town and County on June 13th at 1:30. TRTR has requested to
have transportation planning placed on the agenda. Agnes Oakeley stated she
would take our request directly to the Commissioners. Also, the Town was
notified with a similar request. It is not clear if we will actually be
added to the agenda but we want to encourage as many people as possible to
attend the meeting as a citizens forum is on the agenda.
Our purpose, in attending this meeting and getting heard is to let the Town
and County know we plan to hold a public forum on roads in mid July. At this
time this forum is generating momentum where several community groups are
interested in participating. Stay tuned for more information about this
forum and other news related to transportation issues.
If you are at all interested in having your voice heard and input considered
about preserving our rural community and it's various neighborhoods now is
the time to get involved. Both the Town and County governmental agencies
appear to be listening and we can in constructive ways help them clarify and
prioritize our transportation needs (motor vehicle, pedestrian, bicycle and
public modes of travel). WE don¹t have to sit back and wait for years to go
by before our roads are at least improved and made more safe for all who use
them!!!
Another opportunity to have your voice heard will by on May 30th (at
Albright) when the County again meets to discuss the proposed Taos County
Government Complex. The infrastructure issues such as transportation and
road congestion in and around the proposed site need to be addressed. There
have been some vague references to monies for road infrastructure needs
being generated by increases is gross receipt taxes. Again, the County and
Town need to clarify if we as voters approve proposed bond measures what
will the money be earmarked for beyond the building and maintaining of the
Government Complex.
Also, the next TRTR meeting will be June 11th at 7pm at Cultural Energy
Radio Station (on Blueberry Hill Rd) At this meeting we will continue to
work on forming road committees, developing the citizen petitions and
discussing in more depth the public forum planned for July.
So save the aforementioned dates. I look forward to seeing those who are
actively involved and some new faces on June 11th. Please email if you have
comments, ideas or questions.
Best regards,
Barbara J. Sheppard, President
Taosenos For Real Traffic Relief
