HELLO EVERYONE:
Yesterday Peter Wengert and I met with the Town and County to continue the
discussion of developing a Master Transportation Plan for the Taos Region.
Both the County and the Town were well represented at the meeting despite
the short notice and for some who were unclear of the agenda. At any rate,
I think it was a baby step forward toward putting all the ideas out on the
table of how to address traffic congestion, safety issues, a poorly run and
rarely used public transportation system, and looking to the future with a
plan that includes all modes of transportation not just the automobile.
There will be a series of meetings over the next few months prior to a
public forum. The purpose of these meetings is to prepare and eventually
present various options to the public of how to address the aforementioned
transportation issues. Both Peter and I stressed the importance of looking
at the larger picture and including the LU planners in the discussion. Of
course funding of any grand plan will be an ongoing challenge yet if the
Town and County share resources and expertise then it will be possible to
work on getting State and Federal funding.
I encourage those with expertise or a special interest in any part of
developing a comprehensive Transportation Plan to get more involved.
Last evening TRTR had our meeting and I want to thank those who attended. At
this point TRTR is in the process of developing committees or task forces in
the following areas in efforts to strategically address all aspects of
assisting the Town and County in creating a Master Transportation Plan. The
committees are as follows:
Roads (addressing congestion relief, repairing, maintaining, and
improving our roads with the Smart Growth Study
as a model and Guide)
Bike, Trails, Shoulders and Sidewalks
ADA compliance and Pedestrian traffic
Public Transportation
Please contact me if you are interested in being part of one of the above
committees. The goal is for each of these committees to work with the County
and Town staff who are involved in these various components of
transportation. TRTR will meet at least monthly and those interested will
also be encouraged and invited to meet with the Town and County in the prep
meetings prior to the public forum. We will also continue to interface with
LU planners and consultants as well as the community at large. Citizens
Initiatives will also be considered but a bit later on.
Our next meeting will be August 6th at 7pm at Cultural Energy Radio Station
(on Blueberry Hill Road)
Lastly, July 25th is the next Joint Powers meeting at 9am at the Town
Council Chambers. Rose Bauhs of the Taos Cycle Club is on the agenda and
will be speaking about a Bicycle Facilities Transportation Plan. Please
attend and show your support!!
Please consider how you can contribute. You can reach me by email or by
phone at 751-7230.
