The article in The New Mexican of June 10, page C-3 and actually states that we are ranked 48th.
Christine Trujillo, president of the American Deferation of Teachers New Mexico said schools need to
provide classes in music and art and programs in middle school thatteach students about different
jobs or industries.
Guidance counselors are also needed. In Albuquerque there is one guidance counselor for every 500
students.
Above statements quoted from the article which I cannot find on-line as yet.
So far we are ahead of Georgia, DC, and Nevada. 56% of our students statewide graduate in 2006.
Girls are more likely to graduate than boys.
To increase the graduation rate it is important that third graders know how to read and write,
according to the article by Heather Clark.
Veronica Garcia, NM Secretary of Education:
"You'd be more inclined to stay in high school if you find someting that is relevant and more like
what you want to do."
DUH!
Keep kids interested. What a concept. Teach them to read and write at an early age, get them
singing and into the arts and any variety of sports and athletics and soon you are addressing the
whole person, not just math and history and the core college aimed classes.
To start to answer jmac's question.
I am sure that our very own school board in on this issue like slime to a quohog.
