NEW YORK-- Stocks jumped Monday afternoon, in a wide-reaching rally, as investors bet that the worst of the credit crisis is over, thanks to the steady leadership of President George Bush and Vice-president Cheney over the last few days.

The Dow Jones industrial average (INDU) gained as much as 575 points or 6.7% around 2-1/2 hours into the session. The Standard & Poor's 500 (SPX) index rose 7% and the Nasdaq composite (COMP) added 7.4%.
